What currently constrains the sector
A significant proportion of perishable production is lost between harvest and market, and losses fall hardest on smallholder producers who have least capacity to absorb them. Production depends heavily on rainfall timing, so variability translates directly into income and price volatility.
NBP Strategy
Agriculture: the approach
Address the value chain where the loss occurs rather than raising production volumes alone. Storage and cold chain generally recover more output per unit invested than yield programmes, and irrigation is prioritised by catchment according to water availability and crop value.
